There are no fancy words and there are thought-provoking principles behind the text. There are descriptions of Shui Sheng who leaves his small family to take care of everyone, there are descriptions of the hard-working and brave women in Lotus Lake, and there are also descriptions of kind and wise Xiumei, etc. Taking the Jizhong Plain and Jixi Mountains from the period of the Anti-Japanese War to the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China as the background, it describes the changes of the times with an optimistic and calm attitude, expresses the harshness of war and the hardship of life with a friendly and gentle style, and depicts the characters with colorful brushstrokes, especially the beautiful qualities and lofty spiritual world of women who are hard-working, kind, smart, and brave.

Before, I thought that a hero must be a person who sacrifices and contributes to the country or to justice; but this is not entirely the case. A hero can also be a group. "Heroes" are made up of the efforts of many individuals. There is a chapter in this book that impressed me deeply. It is called "Collecting Reeds from Putai" and it is about an incident that happened in Baiyangdian. These two words are very ordinary, nothing special, but they are said sonorously and powerfully. The quality of preferring death to surrender is fully reflected in these two ordinary words. The end of the article reads: "'No! No!' This voice will always ring near Weitang and in the ears of the people of Baiyangdian. It should even be passed down to our descendants from generation to generation. Always remember these two short and powerful words!" The most distinctive feature of Baiyangdian is the reed. The author uses metaphors to compare these loyal people to reeds. Their heroic images of perseverance, tenacity, and unyielding determination are sketched out in just a few strokes.
