The Way of War Brings Misfortune

The Art of War and Its Misfortunes is a cultural history of war centered on weapons and warfare. Its title comes from the Dao De Jing: “Weapons are instruments of ill omen, not the tools of a gentleman, who uses them only when there is no other choice.” The imagery is complex and far-reaching. “Weapons” refers not only to arms, but also to war itself.

The book offers detailed descriptions and analysis of the many techniques and strategies involved in weapons and warfare. On one hand, the author marvels at humanity's skill and courage in wielding weapons, and at the great intelligence and ingenious strategies displayed in war. On the other, the author deeply reflects on the absurdity and cruelty of war itself. Drawing on the histories, cultures, exchanges, and conflicts of civilizations around the world, the author begins at the two ends of the bridge between world civilizations, Western Europe and East Asia, and turns what seems like a disordered series of historical tales into a sweeping portrait of conflict throughout human civilization.
