After World War I, Barnes, an American young man living in Paris, worked as a reporter for a newspaper and fell in love with Mrs. Ashley from England. Due to being injured in the war and losing his sexual ability, Barnes has never been able to truly combine with Mrs. Ashley. He often drowns his sorrows in alcohol and tries to forget the pain under anesthesia, but to no avail. The two went to Spain with a group of friends to participate in the bullfighting festival. Mrs. Ashley, who is romantic and pleasure-seeking by nature, fell in love with the matador Romero, who was much younger than herself. Although Mrs. Ashley ended her relationship with Romero and returned to Barnes, they both knew in their hearts that they could never truly be together.

I have been wanting to read Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises for a long time. When I was taking English language and literature classes, I always heard the teacher say that Hemingway was a representative writer of the lost generation, but I never seemed to have read his works. The male protagonist, Barnes, is also related to the background of the war. He was injured in the war, and was mentally and physically devastated after the war. After falling in love with Ashley, he just drank to drown his sorrows. Ashley briefly cheated, but eventually returned to the male protagonist. Sadly, they can never truly fall in love. What a pity.
