Hai Rui lived as an official in the Ming Dynasty during the Jiajing, Longqing and Wanli dynasties. He successively held the posts of county magistrate, head of the household department, prime minister of Dali Temple, governor, censor, and right minister of the civil service department. He was honest and upright throughout his life and was recognized by the people and historians as a "great upright official".
