"The Romance of the Tang Dynasty" follows the events and characters recorded in the official histories "Zizhi Tongjian" and "Twenty-Four Histories" as its classics, uses anecdotes and legends as its latitude, and takes the female perspective as its principle. It humanizes and popularizes historical facts, and uses the characteristics of literary novels to show the picture of life in the upper class of the Tang Dynasty. The biggest feature of this book is its novelty. It avoids similarities in plot with other books on similar themes. The author Lan Boning strives to be different in terms of specific plots and entry points. He relies on official history, corrects historical attitudes, and restores historical stories seriously and responsibly.

This book is very interesting! It shows the life of the upper class in the Tang Dynasty from a female perspective and gave me a new understanding of that era. Moreover, the content is novel, and the plot and entry point are different. For example, the story of Concubine Zhang and Concubine Yin made me see the debauchery and tyranny of Emperor Yang of Sui Dynasty, and also felt the helplessness and sorrow of women in that era. All in all, this is a great book worth reading!
