The General’s Wife Wants to Break Off the Engagement

The soldiers all marvel that General Xiao Xie, despite his delicate, handsome looks, eats and lives alongside rough men like them. It’s truly admirable. What a waste of the new, beautiful cook’s skills, though. Will they ever get to taste her food?

Ning Wanyi: How is that my fault? I work diligently every day, but even Xie Xiang’s horse refuses to go near the food I cook.

General Xiao Xie: Try it and see. I bet poison would taste better than this.

Deputy General Chen: Then why keep this woman around?

General Xiao Xie: To make the food taste better!

Xie Xiang comes to break off the engagement, claiming he isn’t worthy of the eldest young lady and that he has a confidante named Tian Wan beyond the frontier.

Ning Wanyi can’t listen to any more. Ignoring all propriety, she rushes into the study: “Since when did I know you were so devoted to me?”

Xie Xiang is stunned. She isn’t the younger sister-in-law of Colonel Feng in the northern frontier, nor the cousin of the nephew’s wife of the governor of Jinzhou. Tian Wan is actually Ning Wanyi, the woman betrothed to him by the Duke of Zhenguo’s household! Just how many secret identities does this young lady have?

Ning Wanyi lets out a cold laugh. “Jinzhou is cold, so I wear extra layers to ward off chills!”

Chen Ting: “I hear the Seventh Prince and the heir of the Marquis of Xiangyang are also interested in Miss Ning. Our general’s household can’t compete with them.”

Xie Xiang: “No matter. Neither of them is as handsome as I am. Besides, who doesn’t have a secret identity or two?”
