Synopsis

Frederick Lewis Allen was one of the pioneers of social history writing. Through vivid descriptions of news, fashions, and customs, some of the changes that have transformed the rhythm and form of American life over half a century are charted and explained. The Age of Change is the author's most ambitious book, defining a transformative moment in American history. The author celebrates a new economic system that brought benefits to the American people and provides an implicit, illuminating perspective on what happened in the second half of the 20th century. "The Era of Great Change" is divided into three main parts. The first part depicts the interference of the rich in national politics under the "old order". The federal government was largely subordinated to business interests, and the gap between the rich and the poor increased accordingly; the second part, "The Dynamics of Change", describes the various forces that have gradually changed the country's traditions since the 20th century: mass production, the Great Depression and the big government model, World War II and the rise of the United States as a world power. Against this background, the author shows how economic institutions can be reformed without being destroyed; in the conclusion, "The New America" is a promising assessment of postwar American culture, and Allen analyzes many common and critical issues.

This book is very interesting! The author, Frederick Lewis Allen, is really great. His descriptions are very vivid and gave me a deeper understanding of American history. I especially enjoyed his analysis of the various forces in times of change, which I found very enlightening. However, I kind of hate the wealthy people who manipulated national politics under the "old order." Fortunately, the author also pointed out the benefits that the new economic system has brought to the American people. Overall, this is a book worth reading and I recommend it to you!
