A carefully planned burglary turns up the corpse of a child wrapped in amber. The deceased is the very daughter the homeowner lost twenty years ago, yet the homeowner vehemently denies it. A physicist cracks the mystery of the amber, but the homeowner is soon found brutally murdered at home, covered in whip marks. The fatal injury, however, is a rupture of the internal organs. Ye Ke, hospitalized after a “work-related injury,” runs into the thief and watches helplessly as he is killed beneath the wheels of a car. Before dying, the thief hands Ye Ke a stack of money orders. The victim’s movements seem to point straight to the killer’s identity, but the deeper Ye Ke investigates, the farther away the truth seems to get. A sudden fire breaks out at an orphanage, destroying the archives and killing the old director in the flames. A dancer at the peak of her career breaks a leg during rehearsal. A full-of-holes alibi leaves the killer on the verge of exposure, yet Ye Ke still can’t find his way out of the maze, while the killer’s methods continue to trouble Cheng Yao. A medical record from twenty years ago gives Ye Ke fresh hope. The truth is finally within reach, and Cheng Yao finds the murder weapon, only to discover that this time, he isn’t the protagonist...
