Synopsis

In a fifty-four-year era of chaos, fifteen dynasties ruled the land, yet more than fifty men from eight different clans became emperors. A dozen or so rival regimes took turns in a farcical dance of power. After the upheavals of the late Tang Empire left the realm gravely weakened, it could only lick its wounds in silence this way. Such a chaotic age was bound to be turbulent and unconventional, bound to produce tyrants who defied the heavens, and bound to see a good ruler who would move history forward. In a twisted age of twisted humanity, what were the lives of the emperors of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms like during the brief lulls between bloody massacres? This book selects thirty-five representative rulers from that period and explores their lives and politics to reveal the legendary history of a chaotic age.
