The novel is narrated in the voice of Tang Shuisheng, a country boy who travels to Shanghai and is assigned to work as a maid next to the popular dancer Xiao Jinbao. It examines the changes in the ten-mile foreign market in Shanghai through the eyes of a countryman. Little Jinbao is the mistress of the gang leader Mr. Tang, but in his heart he loves Mr. Tang's brother John Song. Although Song John and Xiao Jinbao have an affair, they only want to obtain Mr. Tang's status. In the power game between Mr. Tang and his general John Song, little Jinbao's fate is arranged and controlled by others, like a leaf in the wind, unable to control himself.

I watched the movie directed by Zhang Yimou and watched the movie "Grandma's Bridge". I saw the original novel "Once Upon a Time in Shanghai" and I thought it was very good to watch the thrilling gangster movie "Little Jinbao".
The story is written in the memories of 70-year-old Shui Sheng. Shui Sheng finally buried little Jinbao's remains under the mulberry tree in his hometown because he always dreamed that little Jinbao said he wanted to go home, but he didn't know where little Jinbao's home was. Little Jinbao was bought back to Shanghai by Mr. Tang at the age of 14 and died in Shanghai at the age of 24. Shuisheng came to Shanghai at the age of 14 and returned to his hometown at the age of 70.

This book shows the changes in Shanghai from a unique perspective, making me feel the complexity and cruelty of that era. The little Jinbao in the book had a bad fate, which made me sympathize very much. I like the description of the environment and details in the book, such as the cars in the yard and the iron mesh above the fence, which made me feel like I was in Shanghai of that era. I also associated it with my own life, and felt that I should cherish my current happiness and strive to pursue my true love.
Passionate woman, ruthless man, the love and hatred of a dancer
I watched the TV series "Like Sparks Like Butterflies" which is an adaptation of the novel "Once Upon a Time in Shanghai". I found the novel and read it again. The plot was very different. On the basis of the novel, some more characters and plots were added, and the characters' personalities changed. The novel described the boss in Shanghai more realistically.
