Legend of the Kingdom of Women

The Kingdom of Women has no written language and remains a primitive society of slash-and-burn farming. Its mountains are like invisible walls, isolating it from the rest of the world for centuries. After forty-two years, the first young woman is finally about to leave for the provincial capital to attend university!

Forty-two years ago, Teacher Li, a former soldier, came to the shores of Lugu Lake by chance and established a school here. The people had never had a written language, nor did they know what a school was. He found the funds to run the school on his own and looked after the handful of girls who attended. Generations passed, and now Duma has emerged from the mountains. Luojiazui has its first university student. This is only the beginning. The Mosuo people, raised in isolation and accustomed to solitude, may not understand that the future of the Kingdom of Women belongs to the knowledgeable, educated young generation!
