A Brief History of Modern China: How China Transformed from a Rural Society into a Truly Modern Nation-State

Modern Chinese history is the history from the First Opium War in 1840 to the relocation of the Kuomintang regime in Nanjing to Taiwan and the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. After the late Qing Dynasty, the Provisional Government of the Republic of China, the Beiyang Warlords and the National Government, it is a history of the gradual formation and disintegration of China's semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. The modern history of China is a history of humiliation full of disasters, backwardness and beatings. It is a history of the Chinese people's exploration of the road to national salvation and the realization of freedom and democracy. It is a history of the Chinese nation's struggle to resist aggression, overthrow imperialism to achieve national liberation, and overthrow feudalism to achieve the prosperity of the people. Modern Chinese history can be divided into two stages. The first stage is from the Opium War in 1840 to the eve of the May Fourth Movement in 1919, which is the stage of the old democratic revolution; the second stage is from the May Fourth Movement in 1919 to the eve of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, which is the stage of the new democratic revolution.

This book gave me a deeper understanding of China's modern history. It is like a kind teacher, telling in easy-to-understand language how China has transformed amidst difficulties. What I hate most in the book are the powers that invaded us and made our country suffer. However, seeing the unyielding and struggle of the Chinese people reminds me of my own persistence in the face of difficulties. This book makes me more convinced that as long as we work hard, we will be able to overcome difficulties. It is not only a history book, but also a book that inspires us to move forward.
