In 2016, Jiang Hengru learned that a Sui Dynasty illustration from a Lotus Sutra transformation tableau, originating in Dunhuang, China, was to be auctioned in Britain. He traveled overseas, only to be told on the eve of the auction that the painting had already been sold for a high price. As he continued to follow the news, he met Ding Yue, a young entrepreneur.
Their relationship moved from acquaintances to mutual dislike and, eventually, friendship. Together they weather the ups and downs of the business world and witness the shifting nature of people's hearts. This brings to light an old case from more than a decade earlier: the theft of a national treasure, and the historical responsibility borne by Jiang Hengru's entire family. In the end, Jiang Hengru conquers his inner demons, achieves redemption for himself and his family, and rediscovers the true meaning of carrying on history's legacy.
