The protagonist, Yue Feng, is a poor young farmer. After his father dies, he is left to tend several hundred mu of barren land by himself. He never expects Liu Laipi to show up and demand repayment of a debt. Luckily, his neighbor, Uncle Yu Wei, drives the man away with a group of people, though Yue Feng injures his leg in the scuffle. Then he hears that Liu Laipi has trashed his family's fields, so he rushes over and finds more than ten mu of land ruined beyond recognition. Yue Feng has always known that nothing will grow in the barren fields, so he doesn't take it to heart. He urinates on the spot, never expecting his pee to water a yellow-skinned gourd, the Heaven-Swallowing Gourd. When he opens it, he becomes host to the Demon Dragon Emperor, who comes to live symbiotically with him.
