Dream Seeker

Dai Wangshu, a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, is a famous modern Chinese poet. In 1925, he entered Shanghai Aurora University to study French and began to be influenced by the French Symbolists. In 1926, he joined the Communist Youth League. After 1928, he became one of the authors of Shuimo Society and the subsequent "Modern" magazine, composing modernist poetry. In 1932, he studied in France and Spain. In 1938, he went to Hong Kong and edited the supplement of "Sing Tao Daily". At the end of 1941, Hong Kong fell and he was imprisoned by the Japanese army on charges of resisting Japan. He maintained his national integrity in prison and was rescued and released from prison in the spring of the following year. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he returned to Shanghai to teach. In the spring of 1949, he went north to the liberated areas. Died of illness in 1950. Early poems mostly wrote about personal loneliness and sentimentality. Due to the influence of Western symbolism, the images were hazy and implicit. The later poems express the strong feelings of loving the motherland, hating the invaders and the passionate yearning for a better future. The poetic style is clear and sincere.
