"The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons" is a theoretically systematic, rigorously structured, and meticulously expounded monograph on literary theory written by Liu Xie, a literary theorist from the Southern Dynasties in China. It was written between 501 and 502 AD (the second year of Emperor Zhongxing Yuan of Qihe in the Southern Dynasty). It is the first literary theory monograph in the history of Chinese literary theory criticism that has a strict system and is "big in style but considers the Zhou Dynasty" (Zhang Xuecheng's "Wen Shi Tong Yi· Shi Hua Chapter"). Liu Xie's "Wen Xin Diao Long" is named after Huang Lao Taoist Huan Yuan's work "Qin". His interpretation of the "Preface" says: "The husband's literary heart is also the intention of writing. In the past Juanzi (Huanyuan)'s "Qin Xin", Wang Sun Qiaoxin, the heart is so beautiful, so he used it."
The book has a total of 10 volumes and 50 articles (originally divided into upper and lower parts, 25 articles each). It is based on Confucius's aesthetic thoughts and adopts Taoism. It believes that Tao is the origin of literature, sages are models for literati to learn from, and "Books" are models for articles. The formation of a writer's creative personality is attributed to four aspects: "talent", "qi", "learning" and "learning".
"Wen Xin Diao Long" also systematically discusses the relationship between literary form and content, inheritance and innovation, and in the process of exploring and studying the conception of literary creation, it emphasizes the basic feature of concrete image in artistic thinking activities, and initially raises the issue of image thinking in artistic creation; it has a more conscious understanding of the artistic nature and characteristics of literature, pioneers the study of literary image thinking, comprehensively summarizes the aesthetic achievements before the Qi and Liang Dynasties, and carefully explores and discusses the aesthetic nature of language and literature and the aesthetic rules of creation and appreciation.
