Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy (Two Volumes)

Hu Shi (December 17, 1891 - February 24, 1962), courtesy name Shizhi, was born in Jixi, Huizhou. He was a famous thinker, writer, and philosopher. He was famous for advocating "vernacular literature and leading the New Culture Movement." His articles elaborated on the differences between old and new literature from the perspective of creative theory, advocated new literary creation, translated some works of French Daudet, Maupassant, and Norwegian Ibsen, and took the lead in the creation of vernacular literature. His greatest academic influence is his advocacy of the academic approach of "bold assumptions and careful verification". "Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy" is a monograph on the history of pre-Qin philosophical thought by Chinese philosopher Hu Shi. This book was originally Hu Shi's doctoral thesis "The Evolution of Ancient Chinese Philosophical Methods" when he was studying at Columbia University in the United States. In 1917, he compiled a lecture notes on the history of Chinese philosophy at Peking University based on this. This book is the first history of ancient Chinese philosophy in modern Chinese history that systematically applies bourgeois perspectives and methods. It has historical significance of anti-feudal progress and occupies an important position in the development history of Chinese philosophical history. Its publication is regarded as "a sign of the establishment of the discipline of history of Chinese philosophy. Although it is only the first volume, its achievements and characteristics are enough to open up a new realm for later generations of historians of philosophy."
