The Coming Storm is Huang Jie’s new collection of novellas and short stories. Ten stories, ten lives we encounter. A group of people struggle through everyday life, yet keep going, determined not to let the world change them and hoping to bring a little rainbow into their lives. One is the daughter of a deceased father, unable to forget the father who supported her dreams, and still feeling the warmth of life. Another chooses suicide in the end to protect a family secret and ease her family’s hardship. Another sets out to find her mother to fulfill her father’s wish, then returns with love. Others are burdened by love and held back by it in life after life, yet never stop pursuing it. They retain tenderness toward the world: resolute yet weak, affectionate yet devoted. They strive to live their lives with hope, searching for the meaning of love, the perseverance to keep living, and the courage to go on. We come to realize that nothing is as simple as we imagine. Behind everything lies a chain of cause and effect, and it is hard for us to pity or sympathize with anyone, because every person is real, living in this world. Every person is ourselves.
