The History of the Han Dynasty, Too Harrowing to Read Closely

The Han dynasty marked a high point in the development of Chinese culture. Its society, economy, politics, and culture all flourished, and its foreign relations grew increasingly active. It was one of the world's most powerful states at the time, and was known alongside Rome as one of the two great empires. Zhang Qian's mission to the Western Regions opened the famous Silk Road for the first time, creating a trade route between East and West and making China the center of the global trade network. It was because the Han dynasty's fame spread so far that foreign peoples began calling the Chinese of that era Han people, a name they themselves were glad to embrace. The word Han outlasted the dynasty and gained lasting influence: the ethnic group is called the Han, the people are Han, the language is Chinese, and the writing system is Chinese characters. The Han dynasty's significance to China was not merely political. It became a source of cultural identity, fusing people from different origins and backgrounds into a shared sense of belonging. It gave them all a name to take pride in. From then on, Han became the enduring name of the great Chinese people.
