Synopsis

"Elements" is an immortal work by the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid, which integrates the achievements and spirit of the entire ancient Greek mathematics. It is both a masterpiece of mathematics and philosophy, and completed human understanding of space for the first time. Since its publication, the book has gone through many translations and revisions over more than two thousand years. Since the first printed version was published in 1482, there have been more than a thousand different versions. Apart from the Bible, no other work has been studied, used, and disseminated as extensively as the Elements. The earliest translation into Chinese was completed in 1607 by the Italian missionary Matteo Ricci and the Ming Dynasty scientist Xu Guangqi, but they only translated the first six volumes. It was confirmed that this fragment determined the basic terms of modern Chinese mathematics, such as triangle, angle, right angle, etc. Eastern countries such as Japan and India all use Chinese translation, which is still used today. In the past hundred years, although this great work must be mentioned in middle school textbooks in mainland China, Chinese readers have not had the opportunity to see its complete picture, and it is even more delusional to include it in family collections. When Xu Guangqi translated this work, he had a very high evaluation of the book. He said: "Those who can master this book can master everything; those who love to learn this book can do nothing unscientific."
