The novel runs through the forty-year history from the Anti-Japanese War to the period of bringing order to chaos.
Liang Daya and Chen Mohan are fellow townsmen in Lanqiaobu Town, a mountainous area. Because of their different origins, they participated in the revolution in different ways and took different paths. In order to fight against Japan, Chen Mohan proposed to find the Communist guerrillas, while Liang Daya advocated defecting to the Kuomintang's regular army. Unable to convince each other, they each took one person and went their separate ways.
However, fate was unpredictable. Liang Daya, who wanted to join the National Army, encountered the Eighth Route Army guerrillas. Inspired by the personality of the commander Yang Tinghui and the temperament of the female Eighth Route Army female Dongfang Wenyin, he stayed in the guerrillas and began his colorful fighting career. He also began the difficult transformation from a gangster proletarian to a voluntary true revolutionary. But Chen Mohan met Liu Hanying, the Kuomintang's brigade commander stationed in the Aotu Mountain area, and was involved in the contradiction and hatred between the Seventy-ninth Regiment and the direct troops of the Kuomintang.
Both the Kuomintang and the Communist Party were fighting against Japan. There was a certain degree of cooperation in combat operations, but there were still contradictions in the cooperation. Within the Eighth Route Army, the struggle between various ideas and lines also made military heroes such as Liang Daya more mature.
The Anti-Japanese War ended and the Liberation War began. Chen Mohan led the remaining members of the 79th Regiment to rebel against the Communist Party. Dongfang Wenyin, who fell deeply in love with Liang Daya during the common battle, died heroically to support the uprising troops: Liang Daya had to become a comrade-in-arms with Chen Mohan with a heavy and complicated mood. It was not until they returned triumphantly from the Korean War that the two went to different posts.
But not long after, the Cultural Revolution began. The ancient monument of Jiang Tongzhi who was in Aotu Mountain used some "historical issues" to "pick out" them all at once, and moved them to the same farm, and they lived in the same room. In their long working life, they went from hostility to indifference, from indifference to reconciliation, and from reconciliation to mutual understanding.
After the Cultural Revolution, Liang Daya, Chen Mohan and Dou Yuquan came out again after experiencing an extraordinary period. Those familiar comrades and comrades also had different endings: Jiang Gubei was sanctioned; Zhu Yudao, who had an unstable stance and made mistakes, was not only censored by the organization, but also tortured by his own conscience; Zhang Pujing, who always adhered to his principles, was persecuted to death: at the memorial service held for him, former comrades gathered together again to recall their experiences of fighting together.
Finally, Liang Daya and Chen Mohan, who have passed their 60s, decided to start from themselves and from now on to stand up for their own posts in building a modern army.
