One of the four major condemnation novels of the late Qing Dynasty, the first edition was signed "Initiated by a lover of freedom, compiled by the sick man of East Asia". The book has thirty-five chapters in total; using the experiences of Suzhou champion Jingou and the famous prostitute Fu Caiyun as clues, it shows the historical changes in China's social, political and cultural life in the thirty years from the early years of Tongzhi to the Sino-Japanese War of 1884-1894.
