The instant Black Tiger crashed to the ground, it felt as if the sky had collapsed above me. Nearly all the rifles fired at once. Their muzzles spat flames of revenge, raining bullets down on the wolves.
There was no sympathy or pity left in anyone's eyes. Their hearts were filled with hatred. In the blink of an eye, the remaining hundred or so wolves, along with Black Tiger's mother, lay dead.
At last, the massive wolf disaster was crushed by the villagers' desperate resistance, ending with the wolves wiped out to the last one. Yet no one showed joy or smiled. Instead, a heart-rending pain rose in everyone's chest.
The pain was beyond words, more unbearable than suffering and torment endured firsthand. It was as heartbreaking as watching a loved one or dear friend die, like a thousand-pound boulder crushing your chest until you could barely breathe!
Tears streamed down everyone's faces. We hunted wolves again and again, and suffered loss after loss: we lost Dalong, the police dog; our poultry and livestock; our family and fellow villagers. Many villagers were hurt, and so was our Black Tiger!
Though we won in the end, the price was simply too high, too great to accept, enough to break our hearts...
It would be more accurate to say that the wolves and the villagers, two different species, hurt each other, rather than that people ultimately wiped out the pack!
Many years have passed, but I have never escaped the shadow of that terrible tragedy. Whenever I'm alone, I struggle with the memories. Though I'm now well past sixty, I still take out the little wooden box holding Black Tiger's keepsakes and the memories I've sealed away, and relive those bygone days and that unforgettable experience...
I like to read animal-related stories. The author writes so wonderfully and touchingly! The love between Xiao Feng and Cai Die is pure and sweet! The black tiger's loyalty to its owner is also admirable! Also, Black Tiger's affection for his mother's blood is thicker than water, which is very warm and touching!
