Before Heaven and Earth were divided, all was known as chaos. Heaven and Earth were mixed together; the sun, moon, and stars had yet to form, and day and night, cold and heat had yet to alternate. There was no wind, rain, thunder, or lightning above, and no plants, mountains, rivers, people, birds, beasts, or insects below. At that time, a current of spiritual energy coiled and flowed within the chaos. Thus, water arose from the Great Change, fire from the Great Beginning, wood from the Great Origin, metal from the Great Simplicity, and earth from the Great Ultimate. And so the Five Elements came to be. Afterward, Heaven and Earth, plants, mountains, rivers, people, birds, beasts, and insects each developed in their own way. Among them were many of keen intelligence and spiritual insight, who glimpsed the mysteries and embarked on the path of cultivation.
