Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio

Wang Yi was a pale-faced scholar. When he was young, his parents arranged for him to marry Zhang, the daughter of a close friend. But later, his parents died tragically, and his family fell into decline, leaving him destitute. His father-in-law, however, was an upright man who still acknowledged their engagement. He also valued Wang Yi’s literary talent and hoped to help him succeed one day. Unfortunately, his daughter Zhang looked down on Wang Yi for being poor and cared only for wealth and status. After they married, she was not too brazen in her mistreatment of him, afraid her father would scold her. But fate dealt another cruel blow: before long, his father-in-law passed away too.
