The Medium Forensic Doctor

To doctors, death is simply the inevitable result of illness or injury. Medically speaking, every death is caused by an illness or injury. Even elderly people who die peacefully in their sleep after a long life must have some underlying condition that explains it. As a result, medicine’s understanding of life and causality becomes mechanical, simplistic, even brutal. If someone has a fever, lower their temperature. If they have stomach cancer, remove part of the damaged stomach. If their blood pressure is too high, dilate their blood vessels. If their heart is too weak, use a pacemaker. If they can no longer breathe through their mouth, insert a tube into their windpipe... So I often question myself: This explanation sounds convincing and straightforward, but can it really account for the causes and effects of life? The Buddha said: “Those who revere cause and effect will not die a terrible death!”
