This book is very good. Don't use your own subjective assumptions to think about what the male protagonist would do. This is a realistic book. Why can't you put yourself in the male protagonist's shoes and consider whether any of the male protagonists did a good job when you faced the male protagonist's predicament? It's very good. I've read it four times and I have a different understanding every time.
