Journey to the West: I Wish to Travel East

The familiar tale of Journey to the West becomes an eastward journey: the four masters and disciples, along with the White Dragon Horse, carry the Eight Heavenly Scriptures to the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to spread their teachings. But the journey is far from simple. They encounter all kinds of demons, and after fighting them again and again, discover that every one of those demons has powerful backers. No matter what evil they do, they never face punishment.

The wicked roam free, the rich indulge in food and wine, the powerful never fall, and the suffering pass their days in tears. This absurd, dark society is despairing. Even if Sun the Great is righteous and his resolve unshakable, fighting alone in the abyss of a blackened society is futile. He casts aside all his powers and extraordinary gifts, retreats to the mountains, and ultimately turns to stone. How much this resembles the many forms of human life. The fantastical world, so strange and dazzling on the surface, is in fact a reflection of real society and human existence.
