In 2300 AD, an accident during research into using the chemical element "Gu" to obtain energy exposed vast quantities of it to the air. It reacted with oxygen and spread across the globe. Rain began falling in deserts, and Earth turned green again. People gradually discovered that they had lost the ability to reproduce. Decades of effort failed to solve the problem, and the human population began to plummet. In 2478, the digitization of stored human consciousness became possible, and the two hundred million people remaining gradually transferred their minds into mechanical bodies. By 2532, humanity had completed its transition from biological to mechanical bodies. In a sense, humans had achieved immortality. But the cries of babies had faded away. Birds still sang and lions still roared, yet humans alone had become outsiders on Earth. Countless people, tired of immortality, chose to have their data erased. Then, one day in 2912, a spaceship launched in 2283 as part of the Mars terraforming project returned. A young couple and a child stepped out of the long-lost ship. As mechanical humans looked upon the only three people still living in biological bodies, the meaning of existence began to stir once more in their neural circuits.
