I Really Was Just Along for the Ride on the Pilgrimage

Zhu Bajie was originally Marshal Tianpeng, the Daoist guardian deity and foremost of the Four Saints. He was banished to the mortal realm after Emperor Ziwei lost a power struggle with the Jade Emperor. He willingly accepted his punishment, unwilling to let the Daoist sect tear itself apart in further bloodshed.

On the journey to fetch the scriptures, the demons they encountered were either guardian beasts of the Daoist sect or mounts belonging to friends. It was all a farce, and Bajie just wanted some peace and quiet, so he spent the whole journey to the Western Heaven slacking off.

He was tired of power struggles, and he had once held a position of great authority. Neither was just a thing of the past, so he accepted the title of Messenger of the Pure Altar. He had thought he would simply live carefree from then on.

Who could have guessed that the Three Daoist Sages would ignore the suffering of the mortal world and refuse to help? With no other choice, Bajie went alone to Spirit Mountain to face all the Buddhas in battle.
