In 1937, when the Anti-Japanese War broke out, Liu Zhongqiu was ordered to serve as the leader of the New 33rd Regiment on the day after his wedding and led his troops northward. His newlywed wife Liu Ruyu was known as a talented woman. After her husband left, she became pregnant and did not want to wait lonely at home, so she formed her own army. He built a unit and led it northward to establish a base at the foot of the Taihang Mountains.
