Du Fu: A Wandering Song for the Young

Learn from the ancient blades of chivalry, and sing of a boy's youth.

Black hair stained by wind and snow, rainbow light and a chill rain of swords.

When Du Fu was a child, his father asked him what he wanted to do. Facing his father's feather duster, Du Fu didn't bat an eye and said, "I want to lie around at home every day, eating and sleeping, eating and sleeping, eating and sleeping." Du Fu didn't like poetry or literature, and had no interest in writing. After traveling through mountains and rivers, he didn't feel the need to write anything to prove he'd been there. He often said, "I came, I saw, and then I...".

Du Fu didn't think he had any lofty ideals or convictions. He would never worry about the nation and its people, put the world's worries before his own or its joys after his own, become an official, go into business, be a poet, or serve at court. Du Fu wanted to be a wanderer.
