Love at First Sight, Far Away

"Got a light?" Someone tapped my shoulder lightly. A young woman, around twenty, came to stand beside me.

Her makeup-free face was delicate and fair beneath the sunlight of the northwestern plateau. Her beautiful hair was tied back in a ponytail. She wore a loose, slightly oversized top and jeans, a cigarette dangling from the corner of her mouth as she gazed into the distance with a look of utter hopelessness.

One of her long, fair hands was held out in front of me.

"What's the big deal? She won't even look me in the eye, acting like she's the queen of the streets." I grumbled to myself, but still pulled out my lighter willingly, almost flattered, and flicked it on with a click. Carefully, I held the flame to her cigarette.
