A knight must first be judged by his character and his sense of righteousness, then by his talent in the martial and scholarly arts, and finally by his sincerity. Only one who possesses all three may be called a knight. Whether he serves his country and its people, or his friends and neighbors, in my view, is not what defines a knight. Ultimately, it comes down to righteousness, excellence, and sincerity.
Serving one's country and people is the duty of the court's officials. Those in the martial world who assist the court are simply fulfilling a commoner's duty to the nation. They may be called sincere toward the country and righteous toward the common people. Helping those who are not one's countrymen for the sake of friends and neighbors is certainly righteous. Knights roam the martial world. Though they may seem free and carefree, in truth they seek fame throughout the world, striving for excellence.
Even so, plenty of people from the martial world enter the court. Yet treacherous factions and corrupt officials oppose them from within, while enemies from the martial world lie in wait outside. Though loyal ministers and good generals may protect them from within, and chivalrous friends may come to their aid from without, it is no easy matter to find a place in the court.
People have long yearned for the martial world, but it is not what they imagine. Much of it is beyond one's control, not carefree and unrestrained...
