Chronicles of the Flower Demon

All things under heaven and earth possess a spirit. Flowers, insects, fish, birds, and beasts absorb the spiritual energy of heaven and earth and the essence of the sun and moon. Over time, they can gather it into a soul. Once they form a soul, birds, beasts, insects, and fish are called spirits; jade, stone, metal, and earth are called animas; things born from the stain of human obsessions are called monsters; and flowers and plants are called demons. Spirits, animas, demons, and monsters may be good or evil. The good can accumulate heavenly virtue and become immortals, while the evil incur the resentment of humankind and meet no good end. Spirits and monsters are born single-minded. Except for those who deliberately do evil in pursuit of a shortcut to immortality, most keep away from the human world. Flowers and plants, however, are passionate and are born with two hearts. They are called flora, and they are found throughout the human world. Thus, flower demons are often seen among mankind.
