The Duku Highway, which runs from Dushanzi to Kuqa, is the early form of National Highway 217. It runs through the north and south of the Tianshan Mountains, with a total length of 561 kilometers. More than half of it runs through high mountains and deep rivers, connecting many ethnic minority areas. It was selected by China National Geographic as "the landscape avenue running through the backbone of the Tianshan Mountains". In order to build this road, tens of thousands of officers and soldiers fought hard for 10 years, and 168 road construction officers and soldiers sacrificed their precious lives. The highway has special terrain, with many sharp bends and steep slopes. More than 280 kilometers of the road section are above 2,000 meters above sea level. Affected by natural factors such as winter snowfall and ice in the Tianshan Mountains, it is only open for five months a year. Winter traffic control is implemented for seven months from the end of September to May of the following year.
