In the primordial age, after Pangu created heaven and earth, pure energy rose to form the sky, while turbid energy sank to form the land. Yet as the turbid energy descended, some of it combined with the vengeful spirits of the primordial gods and demons slain by Pangu, becoming evil spirits between heaven and earth. A thousand years later, these evil spirits released an aura of chaos. Any living being tainted by it would lose all reason, become a frenzied monster, and fall under the evil spirits' control. Using this power to plunge the world into chaos, they were eventually confronted by the mighty Nuwa, King Fuxi, Dao Ancestor Hongjun, the Three Pure Ones, Buddha Tathagata, and Buddha Dipankara. After seven days of fierce battle, they finally sealed the evil spirits inside the Burning Heaven Treasure Box. Since the evil spirits had been born of heaven and earth, they could not be destroyed. After deliberating, the group decided to send the box to another world, where the evil spirits would be cut off from their source and slowly perish.
Several million years later, Buddha Tathagata sensed that the Burning Heaven Treasure Box was stirring, so he sent Arhat Subduing the Dragon to investigate that world. After many twists and turns, Arhat Subduing the Dragon finally found the evil spirits, but he too became trapped in a predicament.
