I Can See the Update Logs of All Things

His father had been dead for three years, yet on the night the apartment complex updated its access-control system, he called Chen Yan.

He was right downstairs.

Chen Yan hurried to the entrance and saw his father standing outside an old line in the concrete, afraid to take another step.

Then a changelog appeared before Chen Yan's eyes, invisible to everyone else:

Fixed: The issue allowing deceased residents to enter the complex through facial recognition.

At first, Chen Yan thought the only thing malfunctioning was the access-control system.

Later, he discovered that objects, buildings, and even the identities of living people were being quietly updated. The new rules had gone into effect, but the old version had not completely disappeared.

Some people relied on it to save their lives. Others used it to take away those who should not be taken.

Chen Yan could see what was changing, but not all the answers. Before the next update, he had to find the path to survival left behind by the old rules.

Then he discovered that his name had been on the invalidation list all along.
