Scavenger's Archive: From the Start, I Found a Civilization's Last Letter

After the tide of wreckage passed, dawn on Lichen Star came earlier than a dog's wake-up call.

Wen Ye crouches in a crack in the abandoned airfield, stuffing a burned and twisted ship's frame into a sack. Scavengers call it foraging: digging through the trash that falls from the sky for scraps they can sell. Then his hand brushes against a piece of hot scrap metal.

White light erupts. He sees a ship in flames and a figure smiling at him with the light at their back. From then on, echoes in the fragments flow through his fingertips and into his heart: deep in the engravings are names, songs, and an entire unfinished story of humanity.

It turns out Lichen Star isn't a graveyard, but an archive someone took apart. Wen Jiuji, his father who disappeared twenty years ago, left the key on half a nameplate.

The Gray Tide is closing in, and the archives on the Council's capital planet hold the truth about their people's origins. Some want him to spend his life digging through trash; others fear he'll turn that page. Wen Ye clenches the fragment in his fist. If he can't pry it open, he'll keep trying. Stone will wear away eventually. It's not going anywhere.
