The Blade in White

That autumn, he walked into medical school carrying a snakeskin sack printed with the word "urea." Inside were a yellowing cotton quilt, half a jar of dried radish, and all the ambition of a country boy. He was supposed to wear a white coat. Later, he took it off, changed into an ill-fitting suit, and stood in other people's corridors, waiting six hours at a time just to offer someone a cigarette. Twenty-five years. A single pen stroke at a bidding table could decide who lived and who died. On the night centralized procurement notices went up, how many people lay awake? Some jumped from rooftops; others stood in the rain, staring blankly at shattered samples. He learned to smile over drinks, sign papers in the shadows, and pore over the books late into the night. One person waited for him for twenty-five years. One vanished on a snowy night. And another spent an entire lifetime wanting to know where they had gone wrong. The white coat was a dream of the past that could never be reclaimed; the blade's edge was a craft for staying alive.
