You Asked Me to Fix a Sewer, and I Became a National Chief Engineer

Fresh out of university, Lin Chuan has an ordinary degree and no connections, so the only work he can find is as an outsourced contractor, clearing clogged pipes and inspecting manhole covers.

Then, on the eve of a typhoon's landfall, a line of crimson text appears before his eyes.

Primary Flood Drain No. 1: 47 minutes of service life remaining.

Projected disaster zone: Metro Line 3, two underground shopping malls, 110,000 people.

The project manager calls him an alarmist, the experts insist the pipeline data is normal, and the viewers in the livestream are waiting to see him embarrass himself.

Lin Chuan offers no explanation. He turns and jumps into a sewage shaft, opening a flood channel that had vanished from the city's records twenty years ago, just before the countdown reaches zero.

Forty-seven minutes later, the flood passes. The entire subway line is safe, and Lin Chuan becomes a legend.

A cracking bridge across the river, a mall full of people with its load-bearing columns cut, a reservoir dam with falsified data, an international airport on the verge of subsidence...

Years later, a reporter stands before the world's largest mega-project and asks him:

"Chief Engineer Lin, how did you first get into this industry?"

Lin Chuan thinks for a moment. "I fixed sewers."
