Siheyuan: Riding the Green Train, I Hear Their Thoughts and Foil the Courtyard's Schemes

Lin Weiguo was a railway train attendant, but he was born with the ability to hear the thoughts in other people's hearts. In the courtyard, Qin Huairu schemed to take advantage of people whenever she borrowed money, Yi Zhonghai invoked morality at every turn to pressure others, and all of Jia Zhangshi's tantrums and tears concealed a hidden agenda. Lin Weiguo heard every truth hidden beneath their smiles.

When Bang Geng stole some corn, the Jia family turned around and accused someone else. They had barely admitted their mistake at the courtyard meeting before going to the neighborhood office to make a false report. Lin Weiguo didn't argue or make a scene. He simply exposed their schemes in front of everyone, leaving them to corner themselves. One ear of corn could cause a whole-courtyard meeting, and one broken pane of glass could make the Jia family pay up and lose face. What he wanted was for everyone in the courtyard to follow the rules.

But life in those days didn't revolve around the courtyard alone. Green trains hid pickpockets and ration-coupon traffickers, while people in the railway system were waiting to see him make a fool of himself. His mind-reading ability could see through people's hearts and reveal what lay behind their schemes. Since nobody could keep anything from him, he would naturally make his way through the railway world more steadily than anyone else. He wasn't in a hurry to catch thieves on the trains or set the courtyard to rights. He would take his time with both.
