I Turned a Lost Civilization into an Online Game

A game studio is due to shut down its servers and liquidate in seventy-two hours. But Zhou Xu uses a hard drive left behind by his missing father to start a "Civilization Compiler," a device that can compile dying civilizations into online games. The first players think they are challenging the only instance server-wide, but soon discover there are no save files and no way to rewind. Players can be projected back into the game after dying, but the city's residents only get one life, and they remember every promise. When an alien engineer calls Zhou Xu by name through the interface, and real-world equipment prints materials that do not belong on Earth, he finally understands: this so-called open beta isn't a game, but a plea for help from a civilization across the stars.
