Siheyuan: A Division Commander Retires and Raises His Son to Become the Top Scholar

In 1949, the protagonist returned in uniform to the courtyard house he had left nine years earlier.

At the age of twelve, carrying memories from a later era, he left home to fight the Japanese. He rose from being a communications officer in the guerrilla forces to joining the People's Liberation Army, earning great distinction in the War of Resistance Against Japan, the War of Liberation, and the Battle of Shangganling.

By twenty-seven, he was deputy commander of the 29th Division, but a recurrence of an old injury forced him to leave the military and return to Beijing.

After leaving the battlefield, he didn't rest on his laurels. He joined the industrial sector, rising from the Machinery Industry Bureau to deputy minister, and helped advance automobiles, machine tools, steel, and the Third Front construction program.

He married Xu Ting, supported his eldest brother's family, and helped the younger generation of the Lin family rise through the military and political ranks.

In his later years, the Lin family's descendants held important positions across the country, and his son went on to become a provincial Party secretary.
