The sky in San Lorenzo is always gray, like a shroud that has been smoked by coal for eight hundred years. Huge brass pipes wind like blood vessels over the city, spewing white steam tirelessly. In the swirl of steam, the three-hundred-meter-high "Cathedral of Truth" loomed. It is the absolute center of the city and a symbol of the power of the Church of Truth. Ron Cavanaugh stood in the shadows of the church's back alley, playing with a rusty gear in his hand.
