The novel takes the rise and fall of the four major families of Jia, Shi, Wang and Xue as the background, with the tragic love and marriage of Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Qingwen as the main line of the decline process. Namely: the story begins when Cao Xueqin is ordered by Nuwa to bring the spiritual jade into the mortal world and transform into Jia Baoyu. It records the whole process of the Jia family and others through three dynasties, from prosperity to decline and integration due to changes in the social environment.
