A Xuanhuan Dream of the Red Chamber

Set against the rise and fall of the four great families of Jia, Shi, Wang, and Xue, the novel follows the decline of the Jia family, with the tragic love and marriage of Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu, and Qingwen at its heart. The story begins when Cao Xueqin, acting on Nuwa's command, brings a magical jade into the mortal world and transforms into Jia Baoyu. He records how the Jia family and others live through three dynasties, going from prosperity to decline amid sweeping social changes and eventual assimilation.
