Republican Era: Lu Xun Is My Granduncle, and I Study at Peking University and Whampoa

After transmigrating to 1914, Zhang Qisheng becomes the eldest son of Runtu. His family has six mu of sandy land and is so poor they can barely afford to eat. When a high fever nearly kills him, the space he carries awakens, containing the bedside table from his past life and a whole drawer full of Western medicine. His memory is enhanced too: he never forgets anything he sees and can read ten lines at a glance.

Runtu takes him to visit Brother Xun at the Zhou family's home in Shaoxing. Brother Xun tests him on university studies, and he recites everything word for word. He flips through a page of The Theory of Evolution and recites the whole thing two minutes later. He can even hold a conversation in English without missing a beat. Brother Xun makes up his mind on the spot: "I'm taking this child to the capital."

At the Bushu Bookshop in the capital, Brother Xun arranges for him to transfer into a class at No. 1 Middle School. He gets perfect scores on all three entrance exams. When his homeroom teacher asks why he studies, he stands up straight and says, "I study for the rise of China." In his spare time, he works at the library and sweeps its entire collection into his mind. He sells his best man's suit and bedside table for several dozen silver dollars. Professor Qian visits and debates the Iron House with Brother Xun, while he sits quietly by and listens to every word.

Late at night, he closes the last classic and gazes at the lights outside the window. "I have to get into Peking University, and I have to go to Whampoa too."
