The Apocalypse Begins: I Evolve from a Low-Level Zombie

From the start, all I have is a head, and evolution depends entirely on devouring. I am reborn as the weakest, lowest-grade zombie. My kind gnaw on me, and humans hunt me down. No matter: eat zombies, and my limbs regenerate; devour ability users, and I steal their skills. From a rotting, broken body to bones of steel, while everyone else struggles to survive, I have already evolved a thousand hands and a thousand eyes. In the third year of the apocalypse, the Human Alliance kneels before me and begs for mercy. They have no idea that the low-level zombie they once crushed without a second thought is now the king of the entire city.
