In 1938, on the eve of the fall of Changsha, normal school student Shen Huaian and exiled female student Su Yuehua met during the war and moved westward with the school. During the three-thousand-mile war journey, from the Miao Village in western Hunan to the dangerous pass on the Shu Road, they witnessed suffering and gained growth. In the temporary school building in Chongqing, the two separated again because of their educational concepts - Su Yuehua went to the front line to establish a school for needy children, while Shen Huaian stayed behind to complete his studies. Mountains and rivers are broken, but their original aspirations remain unchanged. They use education as a weapon to guard the fire of civilization in the smoke of gunpowder. The letter that has never been sent carries the most precious promise in troubled times: when the mountains and rivers are restored, the begonia flowers will bloom.
